Rope piece I-IV (2026)

Varying sizes

With a basis in Charles Ray’s “Plank Piece I-II” (1973), I investigate a weight relation between a body and a plank. By removing the constants of the wall and floor from Ray’s piece, and adding a rope tying the body and plank together, a different dependency is created. The body ends up hanging by a thread, hoping to keep itself up. The plank does not pin the body, the body is instead desperately trying to hold on to it, put its weight on it, to keep them both up. It creates a delicate yet physically demanding balance with constant uncertainty. An uncertainty mirrored in many parts of society when the constants we depend on are continuously removed.
